What are rostered days off?
A rostered day off (RDO) is a day in a roster period that an employee doesn’t have to work. This is an hours arrangement which is a system of working extra hours per day or shift over a roster cycle to enable an employee to take a paid day off every four weeks.
The object of the RDO system is, to achieve an average of 38 hours per week, to permit, as an alternative to working 7.6 hours per day, the working of 8 hours per day for 19 days followed by a rostered day off.
This means that for three weeks, 40 hours per week are worked and then in the fourth week, 32 hours only are worked, giving an average of 38 hours per week over the 4-week period.
To avoid fluctuating weekly wages, pay is averaged over the whole four-week period. In other words, they receive payment for 38 hours each week whether they work 40 hours or 32.
This is achieved by the creation of a ‘credit’ of 0.4 hours (24 minutes) for every day that 8 hours is worked. These ‘credits’ are accumulated over 19 days until, assuming 19 x 8 days have been worked, a ‘credit’ of 7.6 hours (1 full working day) has been accrued. This obligation is discharged by giving the employee a paid rostered day off.

Employees can accumulate RDOs if their roster cycle provides for them. The employee can take the RDO:
• during their normal rostered cycle
• at another time by agreement with their employer.
The employee may bank up to 10 RDOs, which can be taken, or paid out if agreed in writing between the employee and the employer.
RDOs for oil distribution workers
Employees working as oil distribution workers accumulate 1 paid RDO during a roster period of 2 continuous weeks if the roster allows for this.
Payment for an RDO is at the applicable base rate of pay.
Full-time employees are entitled to one RDO for each month of employment. RDOs are taken in accordance with the roster, or to meet work requirements they can be accumulated and taken consecutively.
Payment for an RDO is 20% of the minimum weekly wage rate set out in clause 13.1 of the Award.
